Life-Long Learning

A variety of educational opportunities are offered for both youth and adults, including classes held on Sunday mornings following worship. There are two adult Sunday morning class and four classes offered for youth.

A Bible study meets at 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday evening, taught by the minister and several lay leaders.

Classes for those interested in learning more about the Lutheran Church and for persons who are interested in becoming members of St. Peter's are offered on a regular basis.

The congregation offers confirmation and first-communion instruction for youth, and new member classes and preparation for Holy Baptism as needed. St. Peter's also offers and early-evening Vacation Bible School in the summer.

Service and Outreach

Members of St. Peter's reach out to the community in a variety of ways. The annual Oktoberfest raises funds for the Victoria Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, camping ministry, and other community organizations. Gifts of food and clothing are provided to Goliad County Outreach, and birthday parties are celebrated for nursing home residents. On a Sunday before Christmas Day, Christmas carols are shared with residents of nursing homes and area residents.

A 2-mile section of FM 1961 has been adopted as part of Texas Highway Trash Pickup.

Camp work weekends are held each spring at one of the synod's camps, and a variety of community groups make use of the church's parish hall and picnic area.

St. Peter's participates in the ministry of the whole church through mission support gifts. These gifts - for the work of the church in our local area and throughout the world - support the development of new congregations in the United States and the Caribbean, the ministry of missionaries serving with partner churches throughout the world, educational ministries at colleges and seminaries, campus ministry at both state and private universities, and the development of resources for worship, youth ministry, and outreach.

Additional designated gifts through St. Peter's help support the work of missionaries in Madagascar, the World Hunger Appeal, and Lutheran World Relief.

Funds are also available to assist area residents in need, and several members currently or in the past have served on synodical and churchwide boards and committees.

Twenty-four members and friends of St. Peter's participated in the 43rd-annual camp work weekend, held May 20-22 at Lutheran Camp Chrysalis near Kerrville.  The work weekend included the construction of enclosures surrounding serveral propane tanks and electrical transformers.  Chrysalis is one of two camps operated by Cross Trails Ministry.

Youth

Youth and children are a vital part of the ministry of St. Peter’s, and activities and ministries for them are planned throughout the year.  Youth are encouraged to participate in junior high and senior high youth gatherings, the ELCA Youth Gathering for high school youth, and to experience church camp in the summer.

St. Peter’s recently amended its constitution to expand the membership of the church council to include a member who has not reached the age of 18 at the time of election.

Younger members frequently and regularly serve as worship leaders, including lectors, crucifers, communion assistants, ushers, acolytes, and musicians.

Women of the ELCA

St. Peter’s has an active unit of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, offering opportunities for witness, service, and fellowship.  The congregational unit meets for Bible study and a business meeting the second Wednesday of each month at 3 p.m.  Activities and ministries include piecing and tacking quilts; gathering items for school, sewing and health kits, layettes and soap for Lutheran World Relief; and participating in events sponsored by Southwestern Texas Synodical Women’s Organization, including spring gatherings, area conference events, and the annual convention.

Members of St. Peter’s recently forwarded gifts to be shared  by Lutheran World Relief throughout the world.  St. Peter’s Women of the ELCA unit shared 53 quilts, 85 school kits, 20 sewing kits, 26 layettes, 49 health kits, 39 pounds of soap, and gave $155 to assist with shipping costs.  Lutheran World Relief, an international nonprofit organization, works to end poverty and injustice by empowering some of the world's most impoverished communities to help themselves..
